…but we beseech you, brethren, that you increase more and more; And that you study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands as we commanded you; That you may walk honestly toward them that are outside, and that you may have lack of nothing. ~ 1 Thessalonians 4:10b-12
This scripture has been impressed upon me repeatedly over the last couple of months. Specifically the part about, and to do your own business and to work with your own hands as we have commanded you. Now, I realize that what I’m about to say is taking the scripture out of context. Nevertheless, I don’t think God would be mad or upset with me if I ventured out to say I believe He does want us to mind our own business… if we’re minding our own business, we simply won’t have the time to be minding someone else’s – right??
And so today, I announce that in order to mind my own business, I first have to have one! (Wasn’t that a surprising revelation?!) Welcome… RB Photography. I am going to do it. Not weeks from now, or months from now. But now.
Many, years ago I would wander through the Christian bookstores and fawn over the framed prints that were for sale. They’re always SO expensive, I would think to myself. Why? Why does nearly everything labeled “Christian” seem to be so much more expensive than something similar that is not “Christian”? And then I would start to really look at those prints. Hmn. There’s nothing really special or unique about them that couldn’t be done in a similar fashion.
By me, maybe? Maybe.
Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful… And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season; its leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper. ~ Psalm 1:1;3
This particular scripture is speaking about the person that doesn’t follow ungodly counsel, isn’t living a life controlled by sin, and who fails to be humble in heart. In verse 3 we see the promise for those who abide. The ones that are blessed by godly wisdom. The ones who turn away from sin. The ones who are humble and lead a quiet and peaceable life. These are the ones who are promised to bring forth fruit and prosper.
I know I want the promise to prosper in all that I do, don’t you?
I want God’s blessing in my business. I want Him to lead me. Guide me in my decision making. Help me to achieve what’s been in my heart for so long. Without getting deflated. Without wavering.
He’s promised He will do it for me. And He’s promised He’ll do it for you too.
Obey – even when it doesn’t make sense.
… and then be Happy!
